Coming of Age

    Today I am an adult.

Not when I drank,

Not when I voted,

Not when I took two aspirin.

Not when I faced death,

Not when I faced life,

    Not when I faced love.

Not when I learned fear,

Not when I lost it,

Not when I got it back again.

Not when I married,

Not when I had sex,

    Not when I had children.

Not when I graduated,

Not when I worked,

    Not when I grew old.

Not when my parents said,

Not when I said,

Not even when the law said.

Not any of those times,

But all of them.
