Ascending (Christ Variant of "Ascent")

A single step lies at her feet:

The base of a grand Invisible Stairway

Leading up.

She pauses there, at the step, listening,

Steeling herself for what she knows she must do.

She begins her ascent.

Her voice rises with her, climbing,

Naked, blue in the liquid light of the night,

Quavering:

A song of Love

And Life

And Hope

Straining against the pitying songs of the World.

The waves lap at the rocks, now miles below,

As she climbs the invisible stairway of moonbeams,

Singing.

    She climbs

    On steps of Faith

    Singing Praise

    To the Lord above.

Though she knows that she her voice may falter,

And she knows that she may stumble and fall,

And sometimes it is a great effort to continue,

She knows that this is what she must do:

    She must climb.
